A few feature suggestions for Lettera

Hi Lettera team,

First of all, thank you for giving me access to the beta. I’ve been spending some time with Lettera, and I really like the direction of the app.

I wanted to share a few features and visual improvements that would make a meaningful difference for the way I use it:

  • Split View: The ability to open and work on two documents side by side would be extremely useful, especially when writing while referencing another note or document.

  • More theme options: I’d love to see more visual themes, similar to what Bear offers. Lettera already has a strong visual identity, so having a few carefully designed variations would make the writing environment feel much more personal.

  • Manual folder ordering: It would be great if folders in the sidebar could be arranged manually instead of being restricted to a predefined sorting order.

  • Colored Markdown headings: An option for headings inside Markdown documents to have different colors would improve both readability and visual hierarchy.

  • Folder colors: Being able to assign colors to folders would make navigation much easier. This could potentially work with the existing macOS Finder tag colors as well.

  • More refined folder and Markdown file icons: I think the current folder and Markdown document icons could use some visual refinement. They don’t necessarily need to be customizable — even a single, fixed icon set would be fine — but a more polished and aesthetically consistent design would fit Lettera much better.

These are mostly small things individually, but together they would significantly improve the experience for someone who wants to use Lettera as a long-term writing and document environment.

For the Split View, I think we can right click on any document in the file browser and “open in new window” as well as a tabbed interface. allows you to have as many editing windows as you’d like. It also tracks in both windows if you are editing the same document.

Yes, all of these suggestions are exactly what I am hoping for as well! I want a beautiful Mac app like Bear, but as a standalone Markdown editor with all the features thereof.

Thanks for the kind words, and for taking the time to write all this down!

Point by point:

  • Split View: this is already possible by opening the two documents in separate windows, so it’s covered for now.

  • More theme options: no plans for this at the moment. Lettera is meant to be a “standard macOS app”, the idea being that you focus on your content, not on your container.

  • Manual folder ordering: Lettera is a mirror of the Finder, so we offer most of the sorting it provides, but not manual arrangement, so this isn’t something we plan to add.

  • Colored Markdown headings: we’ve had more requests about this, so I’ll add a +1 :slight_smile:

  • Folder colors: interesting idea, we’ll see what we can do. And since Lettera mirrors the Finder, tags are a sensible place to start looking.

  • Icons: we’re quite happy with the current set, but noted, we’ll keep an eye on it
