It has been high in the list for a very long time, but never made it to the top. We have a good idea of how the revision history should work, and we are eager to do it. But it is a big task, and we can’t say when we’ll get to it.
This makes it sound like you are not close to a solution
been really hoping for this for a while.
Please please please can you guys make this top priority after your next release. It is a must have. I like bear, it’s just what I was looking for in terms of simplicity and having features that are much more powerful than Apple notes. But not being able to undo something after leaving a note is a big hindrance. It’s hard to use this for any serious writing or idea mapping without it.
Thank you for you work !
Just dropping a message here to say that I would also love to see this happen. I use Bear daily and it would be great to have that extra comfort level of knowing I can go back a revision if I make a mistake and realize after I have clicked out of the note.
Bear has so much going for it. I love how minimal it is. Your team has been rightly disciplined and resisted the urge to bloat the app with features it does not need.
Tags are the right way to organize notes for me. The UI, the Typography, and the simplicity are all beautiful. The tag cons are also delightful
! While it doesn’t store files as local plain text there is a basic backup system and it is a local first app which I appreciate.
However, the lack of file history or the ability to backup or restore a single note is a really serious problem. I have lost work because of this
. This really is foundational to a notes app in 2026.
I don’t want to use a bloated system like Obsidian. There are many things about Obsidian I do not like. I don’t want that level of complexity in my life. On the other hand, Obsidian sync is able to provide robust guarantees about the safety of my data. That is really important; they got that part so right.
I understand that if everything is a priority nothing is. On the other hand, I need to trust that my data is safe in Bear and right now I can’t. That’s literally the one thing I really need from this product if I am going to stick with it long term. The fact that this has been high on your list for a while suggests that your team understands this as well. I really hope that this feature can land soon. Bear deserves to be a keeper
.
I suppose that while there’s not a robust note version/history, Bear does exactly what it is intended for; it’s for taking short-term notes, prior to moving the data elsewhere?
That’s definitely not what Bear is intended for, at least according to Shiny Frog Ltd. on the App Store:
Bear is a beautiful, powerfully simple Markdown app to capture, write, and organize your life.
Take notes, plan your day, journal thoughts, organize tables, create lists and tasks, sketch ideas, link notes together, write a book, and much more. …
Yes, I’ve read that, but I’m afraid for me at least, not having a note version history is a major handicap when writing a book. Ulysses has it, Scrivener has it, Written has it, Obsidian with sync has it, even DevonThink has it, etc.
I appreciate Other views may differ.
It is essential to have versioning for the sake of having it for situations where you would really need it. There is a reason why most writing apps have it!
So is it still high on the list 2 years later?
+1 for me aswell. It happened in the past where i went out of a note after releasing I would like to undo my previous actions, but couldn’t anymore ![]()
Indeed, it is…
Are you able to share a rough ETA? Will it be this year?
