Tabs like Web Browsers

To be honest, I wouldn’t like to see tabs inside of bear for already mentioned reasons. A distinction should be made between a specifically formulated feature and what one wants to achieve. In regard to latter macOS and bear already have everything that is necessary to handle multiple notes: the app expose and the dock icons context menu offer everything to select an open note.

To be fair, tabs could be implemented in a way that those who don’t want to use them, don’t have to use them.

Actually it would be a clever idea to tell the devs what you would like to achieve rather than what feature you need to achieve what you like

The value of tabs is obvious. I shouldn’t have to come up with some pithy statement about why I want a feature that is well established in modern computing UI. They understand what value tabs would bring, but are choosing not to implement them. That’s ok. I want tabs in Bear, but I moved on from this a while ago. However, someone resurrected this thread… :man_shrugging:t2:

I know which value tabs offer  My point was: bear already offer multiple open notes. So why not building something around an already existing feature that offers the same value?

It would be nice to be able to have multiple notes opened on the iPhone.

You kinda can.
Open Note 1.
Open Note 2.
And then you can jump around these 2 with the history arrows.

The way I would like to see “tabs” implemented in Bear is:

  • exclusive to iPad, Mac, or web (not on phones)
  • like “stacked tabs” in Obsidian or Tangent only

I think stacked tabs (that is notes stack on top of each other and one can flick or side scroll through them) matches Bear’s simplicity while providing a cleaner way to look at multiple files side by side or in quick swaps than separate windows or multiple regular tabs with an ugly or redundant top title bar (plus, a natural notion of navigation history if you build a stack while drilling through links). They’re also simpler than doing dockable multi-pane document views as present in some apps, while being more powerful and more intuitive, in my opinion.

As I work with many related notes, the poor support for that workflow hurts my usage of Bear. Stacked tabs would be a huge value add for me.

How come Bear and some other apps don’t have macOS built in tabs after Sierra was released? I use it all the time with apps that work after it was released. Apple releasing this feature for apps would hint tabs are useful.

Apple introduced system-wide tab support in macOS Sierra (10.12), released September 20, 2016.

With that update, any app that used standard macOS document windows (via NSDocument or similar frameworks) automatically got tabs — no extra coding required from developers. It worked in built-in apps like Maps, Mail, and Pages, as well as third-party apps that followed Apple’s standard windowing APIs.

Before Sierra, apps had to implement their own tab systems manually.

Just adding yet another lamentation to this. Bear’s implementation of wikilinks and windows is really not up to par. Open a note in a separate window, click on a wiki link, and the note opens in the main window, not in the current one, which makes for a very disjointed experience (come on guys, even Apple Notes gets that right!). This makes trying to follow and build your thinking in the app very difficult and frustrating.

I really think we need

  • Basic tabbing, as provided by macOS
  • Per-tab navigation history

Even OmniFocus, a task app, does this today. I’m hoping this is the next big thing that can be addressed once Bear web ships. It would totally transform the use of the app.

I know how to bounce around Bear, but tabs would make my workflow easier.

Looks like a bug! Something must have changed recently. I’ll have a fix ready shortly :slightly_smiling_face:

Tabs aren’t aligned with our design philosophy, so they’re not on the list for now.

I am sad, but I understand and I am grateful that you share your vision for the app. It’s great to hear what we can or cannot expect :slightly_smiling_face:

And if the wiki link thing can be fixed, that would indeed be very helpful !

If there are no tabs, how about allowing us to show Notes and Tags with any Bear window?

Just got the new macOS build: not only the bug is fixed… you implemented history in each separate window!!

This is awesome! Thank you! I am absolutely delighted and genuinely grateful. This totally changes the use of the app when building complex thoughts and referencing material!
