There is an alternative markdown syntax for footnotes that some applications use and that I personally prefer.
Running text.^[The footnote]
This is very easy and quick to write, and it keeps the note with the text it belongs to, instead of the user, while writing, having to pick a random different place for it somewhere ‘downstream’. When reading the markdown text, the user doesn’t have to go looking for the note text, either. Plus it never needs footnote label renumbering. And it will survive import from other .md apps, like Obsidian.
The syntax is supported in Pandoc’s Markdown, R Markdown, and MultiMarkdown. Here’s hoping that Bear will support it, too![1]
I realise this was discussed before, but I don’t see how adding this alternative syntax would cause any “confusion”. The funny thing is that it does work in this forum! ↩︎
