I’m really interested in seeing how Bear on the web would work given that Bear syncs through iCloud. This would (hopefully) require some kind of approval from our devices I guess; that would make it secure.
I agree with majorgear.
Security is the reason why I chose Bear. Building upon iCloud sync is the beauty of Bear in this respect, which distinguish it from all other full featured note taking app. Having a web client introduces extra attack surface to the app, it has to build very carefully and it is better if I could opt it out.
I had a terrible experience with Evernotes because of their data breach, all my notes were compromised.
Don’t worry, Apple provides the login functionality for the web app to access iCloud, so it will be as safe as icloud.com. And the web app itself is opt in in the way that you don’t need to use it. And for extra sensitive notes, you also have encryption as an additional layer.
Will we be able to retrieve/edit data through an API? or URL Schemes for device apps will be the only way to do it?
No API. The web app talks directly with the Apple servers.
I am very excited for the web version since I often use Windows and Linux.
This is exactly why I am wanting this more than anything.
Have been looking forward to this for sooooo long!
Hi!
I would like to participate in the Web APP testing.I’ve been using bear for a long time, the web version can solve a lot of my problems, I will try to help you improve the web version.
Thank you
I am all in for the web client… been waiting patiently. Here’s hoping we have something before year-end.
Sign me up! Web version is a must for me as well.
Hi @rexikan Will the webapp have collaboration?
No. Note sharing is something we could do eventually, but not in any near future.
Am I correct in interpreting this comment to mean that the ability to share a note via weblink (for viewing only purposes) is not being worked on as part of the web version of bear, and is instead at this point only a potential future feature that may get implemented after the web version is completed? If so, while understandable, that’s definitely a bummer. This is the one feature I still badly miss from my Evernote days and would even gladly pay extra to have in Bear. In good news I do hear you saying that it’s a technical possibility though?
Neither collaborative editing or sharing of read-only notes is part of the web version we are working on now. The purpose of the web app is to allow access to your own notes when being away from your apple devices.
thanks for the update/clarification, I knew that collaborative editing was never in the plans (which is totally fine with me), just wasn’t sure if the read-only note sharing (which has been talked about) was part of the web version you guys were currently working on or not. Definitely still hoping that feature gets added down the road.
Let me know if you need beta/alpha testers for the web version! Didn’t know where else to post letting you know I’d love to help!! The web version and encryption with attachments are two of the features I’ve been waiting for!!
Kevin
I will add my list as someone who would be happy and interested to test the Web version whenever that times comes. I use Bear across 3 devices for both work and personal.
If you’re looking for more testers, I’d love to volunteer. I’m a longtime Bear user, but I have to use a Windows workstation at work. To access my notes, I constantly switch to my Mac or iPhone, and when saving something back to Bear, I have to rely on a Google Keep copy-paste workaround. Testing the web app would be awesome, and I’d be happy to provide feedback.
I second this plea for making web accessibility opt-in. I do not want my notes accessible via the web in any shape or form. I do not want to be able to access them even myself. iCloud has an option to turn on/off data access via the web. Perhaps this is baked in to bear already, but if not perhaps take a similar approach or honor the icloud setting?
