Bear 2.4 beta update

Hello. Does it mean that for our existing notes to be encrypted with ADP we’ll need to export and re-import them, or something similar? Thank you!

The ADP support sounds very promising! Thank you!! I do have a couple of questions:

  • If ADP is enabled, does that mean all future notes and attached files will be encrypted with no extra steps on our end?
  • Will you provide a way to convert previous notes? I would like to have all of my notes protected by ADP. I don’t think an export and re-import would work for me as I have 9k notes and many links that depend on the Note ID.

I mentioned how I would like to pin inside the “untagged” section some template notes which obviously have to remain untagged. Actually it is a matter of creativity how to use pinning inside locations. By the way: when you pin a note inside the “trash” location the note shows the pin icon but isn’t moved to the top. I think that is by design as pinning doesn’t make sense in the trash folder but the pinning attribute of a deleted pinned note is being kept? I would grey out the command to pin a note inside the trash location.

I take the right to disagree here. As you can see in the posts of crumble top and danmills7 they expected that global pinning inside locations means that those pinned notes are also shown pinned under tags.I thought and expected that too, but unlike them, I was relieved that it wasn’t the case. This expectation seems to be the clearer model. The current model of global pinning is actually semi-global

I have an idea how to address my and danmills7 resp crumbletops issues at the same time with a very clear model:

  • notes pinned in tags or in all sublocations of note (untagged, locked, todo, …) are pinned locally (neither shown in tags nor in the “notes” location)
  • notes pinned in the “notes” location are pinned globally and are shown everywhere, not only in locations but even in ALL tags which means that we would have a true global pinning

What do you think?

EDIT:

I overlooked a heavy conflict issue. What if you unpin inside a tag a previously globally pinned note? On one side a local unpinning is expected but on the other side the principle of global pinning would be broken.

So my judgement to the current implementation remains that there is no real benefit of global pinning

I just wanted to say that this ability to pin notes locally inside tags / sub-tags is something I’ve wanted for a very long time, and I appreciate the way that you’ve implemented it. It’s opened up so many more possibilities to me in how I group notes under tags. It allows me to have maps of contents notes that can float at the top inside a tag, without having to clutter up the main notes view. So thank you, Bear team!

I’ll answer both questions at once

ADP will apply to all new notes, as well as any existing notes you edit. Attachments are already covered by ADP, so no worries there.

We don’t offer a built-in way to convert all old notes, but it’s easy to do if you want:
Just select your notes and make a small change, like toggling them to read-only and back, or pinning and unpinning, and they’ll sync under ADP.

That said, we don’t recommend doing this for everything, since syncing a lot of notes at once can take time. You can always just update the notes you care about most.

Also, keep in mind: that enabling ADP means you won’t be able to use the web version of Bear.

Exactly! That’s why we prefer having two main sections: Tags, and everything else. Tags are the core way to organize content in Bear, so it makes sense for pinning to be local to them.

On the other hand, everything under “Notes” shares the same space and those sections are just filters for your full note collection. You can even apply those same filters to tags using special searches.

Unfortunately, sublocations aren’t technically possible right now. But if we get enough feedback about it, we’re open to considering deeper changes.

Hi! Will just editing a tag used by a group of notes do the trick  ? Thanks for following up!

Is there a way to tell which notes have been converted?

If you rename the tag, then yes; since it updates the notes’ text. Otherwise, no.

There’s no actual conversion happening, it’s just about how the notes are stored on the server. The client doesn’t have any info about that. It simply pushes the data into the right slot whenever you create or edit a note.

Thanks @matteo. So it sounds like I could create a tag called something like #ADP, and drag notes I wish to be protected by ADP to it and since the notes are updated they will now be protected by ADP. This method should also preserve the created and modified dates which would be great.

Yes, that will work for old notes. New notes won’t need the ADP tag at all.

Awesome. Thank you! And also a double thank you to the whole bear team for working to enable ADP!

So glad ADP is now an option  If we choose not to use that, and only use bear inbuilt encryption, will the web version support this?

Any spots open in the beta?

Notes pinned inside tags are now only shown as pinned within that tag

Will there be a way to pin a note globally when I am viewing it within a tag?

Asking because when I pin notes, I always want them to show up globally.

Example:

  1. On Saturday, I open my #recipe tag, find a recipe I want to make that week and pin it.
  2. That way I see it throughout the week in my global view and have it at hand when I go shopping and then later on cook it.

With this change, it sounds like I will need to do this instead?

  1. Open #recipe, find a recipe, memorize its name
  2. Go back to Notes and use CMD+O to find it via its name
  3. Pin it

Is that right?

Very excited about the encryption improvements.

Thank you for your work on these two features in particular!

There is no way as global pinning is only possible when pinning inside of locations. It is easy to quickly jump to another tag where the note resides by clicking a tag inside the not. However I have no idea how to quickly jump to “notes” location

You can use the Pinned view to see all pinned notes. So pin your recipes and shopping list and you’ll see them both in Pinned. Not quite what you’re looking for, but maybe it gets you close enough

Hey Bear devs l, I’d love to join the Testflight for Bear’s iOS and Mac apps if you have space. Currently working on testing with Bear web but since I have ADP enabled I can currently get in. I’ve heard from a few folks who have ADP working in Bear 2.4 that they’ve been able to access Bear web.
