Bear Web Public Beta - You are invited!

So, you also need to have iCloud web access turned on.

Which is good. This ensure the web app can’t access my notes.

Would be sweet if I can make a note public, and it works as a blog post!

This is awesome! I just gave it a try with Firefox on macOS and had no issues getting to my notes. Editing isn’t perfect yet, but this is a huge step to being able to easily access my notes from a Linux computer.

Strange, I get this error in both Safari and Firefox in iOS. I do have Advanced Data Protection enabled (I’m not gonna sacrifice the endtoend encryption of all my data for one app ) but I also have Web access enabled and I can access e g iCloud photos via Safari on the same mobile.

@illern I would try this on desktop and see what happens (ensuring the browser has no ad/cookie blocking enabled).

Same! How do we fix?

For now I just switched to Firefox and it worked. For some reason it does not work in Safari.

I’m not in the mood to frequently back up my notes, so I’ll have to pass until the official release.

I have Advanced Data Protection, and I really don’t want to give up my current security to access the notes on web. Would it be feasible to have a control where we can set a note to be accessible via the web app sync?

It could be something like a note is using CloudKit or iCloud sync by default.

Click on a note, then:

Three Dots > More > Privacy > Make Available For Web

This switches the syncing engine from the default to a cloud service outside of Apple.

For setting multiple notes to web:

Select Notes > Privacy > Make Available For Web

I think most users use Bear because of the superior privacy, so having privacy by default and allowing the option to have a hand few select notes be available via web would feel like it aligns with app’s intended functionality then having all the notes be available on the web as long as ADP is not active.

I was reading on Apple’s site, and it looks like we can turn it on and off. Is it okay to leave ADP on, but when I’m ready to use Bear Web, toggle it off, then turn it back on? Any issues with doing this that you can think of? Would that resync notes and cause a delay each time? Is that unencrypting and re-encrypting iCloud all over again each time. What do you think?

Web access to your data at iCloud.com

When you turn on Advanced Data Protection, access to your iCloud data on the web at iCloud.com is disabled to ensure that your data is available only on your trusted devices. If you turn on web access again, you can use one of your trusted devices to approve temporary access to your data on the web.

Tell us more about how we can improve editing! If you have tried, do you find the editing experience better in some other browser?

For now I just switched to Firefox and it worked. For some reason it does not work in Safari.

Hi, thanks for the precious feedback. Do you use browser extensions on Safari? Historically we have seen that some extensions create conflicts with the sign in process. We already dealt with that issue in the past and thought it was fixed, but the symptoms you describe are exactly the same…

I’ve been experimenting with Linux on a laptop lately, and the only thing I was really missing was Bear! This couldn’t have come at a more pertinent time.

Test drove it today - Chromium browser, Arch Linux. ADP was on. It all worked great!

For those asking about an electron wrapped version - don’t bother. Just run chrome with the —app switch, et voila! Bear “app” on a different OS.

Super excited! Over the past few months, Bear has become my primary (actually only) note-taking tool. And now Bear Web is just what I needed to have it run on my tertiary device (a Boox Palma)!

Hi! What you’re doing is a huge effort — thank you so much for your work. I’m also having trouble logging in via Safari. While there’s no fix yet, I’m using Firefox as a workaround. Do you have any plans to add note sorting to the web version? Thanks again

Hi Riccardo, the only extension I use is 1Password, I am using Mac OS 26 beta though, which is probably why it does not work, I have problems with various websites. I’ll try it out on another computer later and let you know.

Bit concerned about lack of app specific password login

Concerned about what specifically? We’re using Apple’s iCloud and we can’t have a specific app password as you’re logging with your Apple ID via Apple’s servers.

Typically, when I’ve signed in using Apple, I’ve been forced to use app-specific passwords. This is the first time I’ve had to use my login and core password, which I found unusual. I don’t understand why Bear couldn’t have used app-specific passwords from a security perspective. You’ll have to excuse my ignorance on the technology behind this.

This is because Bear doesn’t store data on its own server; it is stored in iCloud. So, to view and edit, they need access to iCloud, which in turn requires an Apple ID.
