File/Save As - Feature Request

This might already be on the list a little down the line, but I thought I would contribute this.

I love my “Save As” option in all document editors. I really like to be able to save copies of my open files to new folders while inside the editor. This might be a bit of a hold over from Microsoft Office indoctrination, I admit. I often am working on a document inside of a Claude Cowork shared folder, for example, and want to save a copy to my own files elsewhere for secure keeping and reference. I have been using marktext for this thus far but am not fully satisfied with the in-app experience and polish.

I see you have an export option, but it doesn’t let you export a copy of the file as an .md, the way it does in Bear. I’m sure there are workarounds with duplicating the file and then moving it yourself, but the “Save As” and/or “Export as .MD” would either/both nice quality-of-life improvements for this type of editor.

Hello there!

Save As is already there, it’s just hidden by default (that’s the standard macOS behavior, though we may surface it more prominently). To reveal it: open the File menu, then hold the Option (⌥) key and Duplicate turns into Save As…

Thanks for asking for it, though. I’ll make a note to look at exposing it by default so it’s easier to find!

Having it visible by default would be awesome! Thanks again, I would have never found it without your guidance!

Agree with @LumCogni that having Save As when the file has not been saved is a MacOS behavior and if already Saved, it returns to Duplicate. @matteo not sure if that’s where you are going with that or not. As of now, you always keep the Save option available whether saved already or not. Take a look at Preview to see what I’m referring too.

I also second adding two export options, one for an MD and the other as a Zip. I assume you can follow the same process you use for Bear. I know you have your own Bear format for backup but wonder if using Zip would be an option as an export when exporting multiple files vs a single MD file. Sorry if I extended this feature request into something more.

thanks. -tom

I’m curious: since when is that standard macOS behavior? I just checked a few apps, and most have Save as visible, but in a few it is hidden (there is a Duplicate menu item instead).

That I’m not sure, but the current template of a new document based app from Xcode is configured with the duplicate/save as config.
