I definitely prefer the new bullet style, with indentation. Please don’t bring back the old ones!

The hanging indent (bullet in the margin) was a great feature of 1.x, and I miss it. I think only Bear 1.x had this feature. The hanging indent was great for bullet journaling, because it maxed the real estate for bullet text. Those who say they prefer indented style haven’t given a reason for why hanging should not be an option. They can just not use this option, so why vote to take it it away from others.

With only one level of bullet list, it’s ok to hang. But with nesting bullet lists, hanging is not logically consistent. The second level bullet list is indented, so why the first level is not.

Bullets (as well as other symbols) are hung so that the article remains a traditional look consists of only paragraphs. Which means the bullets can be removed without damage the layout. That is logically beautiful.

But nesting bullet lists break the logic. And articles in modern digital age tend to have more nesting levels.

So the preference of inline bullets is a have-to choice for me.

Please, bring them back!

Fact: hanging bullets take up less space — it makes a lot of difference when using small pop-up windows for multitasking. It’s nice to have bullets on the otherwise empty space on the left.

Debatable, but reading text with hanging bullets is easier visually — your sight just goes down to the next row, and not down-and-to-the-right.

I’ve been using Panda for the last year or so when I needed to access TOC — it’s sad to have a bigger “small” window that shows less content :smiling_face_with_tear:

Actually, Panda was less space-efficient overall, but that’s another topic.

Honestly, Bear 1.0 + TOC covers most of my quirky needs…

Anyways, thank you for your work, team!

Hopefully, I’ll switch to the Bear 2.0 soon

Hello everyone,

while I have a soft spot for the hanging punctuation we received an overwhelming amount of feedback against it, to the point that many users were indenting all the lists manually to avoid it.

As you know, we try to design Bear to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, so we removed the hanging punctuation and there are no plans to bring it back.

As for the ones asking for it to be optional: I’m sorry, but the amount of work and testing that would spur from adding a preference is so much that we can’t really consider it.

As always thank you for your love for Bear and the feedback you’re providing.

Thanks for the response, @matteo, and confirmation.

That’s a huge shame, it was one of the main draws to Bear for me, those little details that went beyond what other apps do.

Unfortunately, I’ll be moving to Obsidian, where I can style my own themes.

All the best with B2.

I am not aware that you can create a theme for obsidian that leads to hanging bullets and quotes. Edit: since you are a dev you probably know it better and will be able to create a theme

If you indeed plan to leave bear just because of that missing feature, you may take a look into spaces writing app. It is a blatant copy of bear 1 and has these hanginging bullets

Yes you can edit themes or create your own with Obsidian, but it does take a little time to do.

I wasn’t aware of Spaces, thank you. I’ll check that out.

Just adding that I prefer hanging punctuation, and the new way bullets are handled (and the inability to tab and create bullets right there) are so frustrating to me. I know I’m in the minority, but FWIW.
