Simple Math Calculating Came and Went?

This is so weird. About a week ago, I entered a simple equation (think 2+2=) and Bear calculated the answer. I had to hit TAB for the auto-generated result to persist. But now that math feature is gone. I’m completely baffled. I thought I missed an announcement of a new enhancement (simple calculations), but then this very welcome capacity disappeared with as little notice as it appeared.

Anyone else experience this? Any ideas as to what happened here?

Are you sure you’re not confusing Bear and Apple Notes? Notes had that functionality added fairly recently.

I can confirm this still works on both iOS and macOS as it’s part of the new OSes autocompletion facilities provided. Maybe you turn it off in the preferences?

@trix180 In Bear preferences or in OS preferences?
I cannot find a setting to toggle on/of.

iOS preferences > general > keyboard > show math results

It also seems that you to have “Check spelling while Typing” (Edit → Spelling and Grammar) on in order to get the results :person_shrugging:

@trix180 @matteo Sorry, but this still doesn’t work.

I wonder if this is enabled on iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1 (betas). Do you see the math preference on iOS?

@trix180 I am not on the OS betas.
And it works on Notes.

same here… it worked a while, but now it´s not… (MacOS 15.0.1)
iOS is working

On other note, thanks for letting me know. I can finally turn off the feature
Was bugging me so much when I was writing math equations via LaTeX.

Just tried it; works on macOS 15.1. I’m running the release candidate.

Thanks to all. Here’s what I’ve discovered: On the Mac (Sequoia 15.0.1), if I open Apple Notes and do a little math (even one instance of 2+2) then math works in both Notes and Bear. It appears that loading Apple Notes triggers the math function globally. Upon closing Apple Notes, the math function still persists in Bear. I’m viewing this as an Easter egg.
