- Bear Version: 2.6.7
- OS Version: Tahoe 26.2
- What were you doing: Searching for a note
- What feature did you use: Search bar
- What happened: I have the global replacement setting for smart quotes turned on. So when I create notes, all quotes and apostrophes are automatically replaced with curly quotes. However, when I then search for those notes, the search bar does not allow the automatic smart quote replacement and the standard apostrophes/quotes will exclude the note because it doesn’t have a standard quote in it. It requires manually entering the shortcut for the particular curly quote I need, which is what the smart quotes global replacement setting is there for.
- What did you expect to happen: I expect the smart quote setting to be consistent across the app and apply to all of Bear, including the search bar I am supposed to use to find the notes I create (not to mention that every website out there uses curly quotes).
On a related note, this separation between how smart quotes are handled in different parts of Bear results in strange behavior during tag creation in the editor. If you type #Bear’s best features#, the resulting tag has a standard apostrophe. It appears briefly as a curly apostrophe outside of the grey highlighted space and then is turned into a standard apostrophe inside the highlighted area next to the preceding character. If you create a tag by typing #Some of Bear’s best features#, the apostrophe remains curly and is in the tag as such. If you type #Bear’s best feature that’s missing#, the first apostrophe is standard and the second is curly. (Btw, that’s the tag I use for this issue
) You can easily see how these two issues combined also make using the search bar for searching with tags that have apostrophes problematic.
