Hello, I have a couple questions about web clipper 2.0 that never got answered in the Development feedback request thread, that I am still curious about:
The old web clipper allowed clipping a web page and appending it to an existing note. Is this not possible with web clipper 2.0?
Using Web Clipper 2.0 when in full-screen safari results in switching windows, as opposed to popping up over the existing full screen window.
Sometimes the web clipper will ask for access to websites that are not the website I am on, and without me having clicked the extension button.
I don’t recall this happening lately, so maybe this has already been addressed, or maybe the websites have been already been configured in settings (allow, deny, ask, etc)
When it did happen, I suspect that it had to do with ads/popups on the page
I realize I can avoid this by letting the web clipper 2.0 full access. I prefer to control
I don’t remember this being a feature of the old web clipper. It’s still possible to select a portion of the page and append it to a note on iOS using the sharing extension if this is what you mean.
This can’t be done because of how the macOS window system works and because the clipper require to activate Bear’s app to save the article.
I don’t have another report of this particular issue, but I suspect this can indeed happen for some websites rewriting the URL or use some other technique. If you happen to experience this again, please report the URL.
I think you are correct; the old web clipper did not allow appending an entire note (“web page content”) to the end of an existing note.
It did have the option to append a link/titled link (and any custom text) to the “start of” or “end of” an existing note. I don’t see this (or equivalent) functionality in the web clipper 2.0 extension for safari on Mac. I’m not expecting it to be added at this point, but maybe it could be add to the way way bottom of the developer’s list of possible features
I see. Thank you for the explanation
Lately I have noticed it happening when I wake the computer from sleep, when I am in private browsing before sleeping the computer (so there is a locked private browsing window open upon waking the computer).
Below is an image showing the popup and a URL (note the locked private browsing window in the background, which I find interesting because I had assumed that would stop everything inside the browser from running… but I guess that is a safari browser behavior thing, and hence an Apple decision)
I would like to ask a hypothetical question: Suppose I give the web clipper 2.0 extension full permissions (so it doesn’t have to ask for permission to access websites). If, hypothetically, the web clipper accessed every single website I navigate to without me knowing (including pages where I enter passwords and other sensitive information), none of that sensitive information should be able to leave my device because the web clipper 2.0 operates fully locally, right?
The option mentioned is part of the Bear iOS sharing extension and not the web clipper. The extension is not available on macOS but it’s indeed on our list.
Interesting. I’ll investigate. The screenshot is quite odd to me because it seems the extension script is run inside a google ads iFrame. As far as I know the script should be injected only the page you are seeing. What version of Safari are you running?
Correct. The Web Clipper does not run any networking code and performs actions only when the extension is pressed. When a website is clipped, the extension creates a new note and, if you have a Bear Pro subscription active, it is synced across devices via iCloud.
