Web Clipper 2.0

Can it capture webpages that require scrolling down to load images? Will it come to iPad?

As mentioned above, some libraries used for async loading on scrolling can’t work with the new clipper. We found a way to work around some of those, so if you encounter a site not working, please report it here.

Yes, the new extension will be available for Safari on iPadOS and iOS.

Thanks for your reply!
I’m sorry, I cannot test it myself because I only have an iPad, but I know that any blog on this website doesn’t load the images until you scroll down: https://blogg.no/
Apologies for it not being in English though!

I’m glad it’s coming to iPadOS and iOS, thanks again!

I tested the webclipper on a blog from that site and it captured all the images, including the ones that were not yet “loaded”. @trix180 said:

The extension “moves” only the HTML content to Bear’s app, and more HTTPs requests are necessary to download the images contained in the article.

which seems to be working quite well in the case of the blog you referenced.

Thanks a lot for testing it! Can’t wait for it to come to iPadOS!

I’ve used the new clipper quite a lot in the last few weeks and 2 key comments @trix180

  1. pls pls pls let us add a tag during the save process - it avoids having to go into Bear, click around and do it manually

  2. On mobile it would be great to set a default capture type eg: full web page. At present you have to scroll thru a bit from ‘just capture web link’

Small things but would reduce friction. Thanks!

Came here to post this too. The clipper is fantastic and it would be even better if the notes had a tag to indicate that they are saved using the clipper. Otherwise I add it manually. But sometimes I forget.

If you just want to add a default tag for all the imported pages, this option is already available on both iOS and macOS.

on iPhone/iPad: Bear Preferences > Web Content Options

on macOS: Bear > Web Content Options in the menu bar

Oh, great, I didn’t know about that - I think it answers my request completely. Thank you!

Yuri

Seems to be working well for me so far.

Room for improvement: the icon doesn’t fit Safari. The line thickness of the circle is slightly too thin, and the icon itself is slightly too big and not visually centered (and I know the difference between visually centered and mathematically centered).

Since we have to have it up there (it’s the only extension I keep in my toolbar), can you guys try to get the icon to feel a little more native? Thanks for considering it!

Yeah even on MacOS26 Beta, the Icon looks a bit alien.

It’s odd that its not red…

I’m aware of that but if you’re clipping articles on a range of subjects, being able to quickly add a tag - or even better, choose from a list of favourites - improves the entire flow.

for an example of this try the Readwise Reader clipper or a less useful one, the obsidian clipper

Yeah, it looks even worse on macOS 26, good catch.

I think it’s blue because that’s the recommended guideline for Safari Extensions, however it doesn’t appear very enforced, and a handful of other ones I have installed use different colors.

I don’t mind the blue, but I’d prefer a perfect match with the stock Safari icons.

Now that we’re on the subject of icon looks, I’d like to make another point for the sharing extension: you can have a colourful app icon in the Share menu.

Any anticipated date/timeline on when this might be released? It would save me time having to install it every day.

Hello,

Based on the feedback received here, we have a Web Clipper 2.0 update to test.

  • New option: Metadata. When enabled, a YAML frontmatter is added to the top of the resulting note, including some information we can grab from the web page. Right now, the information we search for is: author, published date, description and source (URL). This feature requires Bear 2.5 to work as expected.

  • New option: Ask For Tags. When enabled, the extension asks for comma-separated tags each time it’s invoked. The tags will be translated into Bear tags in the final result. This feature could have been approached in many ways, but we don’t want to expose users’ tags for privacy reasons. So the extension is not aware of your Bear tags. I suggest taking advantage of the default tags option along with this one to minimise input.

  • Some improvements for some websites that have been reported

You might not know where the extension options are for your browser. If this is the case:

  • Chrome > Open chrome://extensions/ > Bear Chrome extension 2.0 > Details > Extension Options

  • Safari > Settings… > Extensions > Bear Safari extension 2.0 > Settings

  • Firefox > Open about:addons > Bear Add-on > … Menu > Preferences

Icons and other assets still need some work, but will be done before the final release. The macOS Safari extension will be shipped along with the main app, and the same will happen for iOS/iPadOS. If no other issues or requests will emerge, we most likely ship the new clipper along with the Bear update for iOS/macOS 26 this fall or shortly after.

To update the extension, re-download the archives and follow the procedures illustrated at the beginning of this thread.
