Allow note grouping/organisation (beyond tags)

In addition to the current tagging system, it would be great to have the option to more granularly organise notes in the Notes pane (i.e. without relying on tags alone).

For example:

  1. Create custom-titled folders (and subfolders)
  2. Move relevant notes inside them

This might then warrant (within the same ‘Notes’ pane) a ‘View All’ notes option, versus viewing only those notes inside the selected folder.

This (as one example, for me) would help reduce visual overwhelm from seeing all notes within the Notes pane by default; and allow for more granular visibility levels (without resorting to password-protected as a strategy for reducing visibility of individual notes).

I disagree with the folder structure, I like tags significantly more, i just wish there was the ability to add smart folders like showing all notes specifically tagged #Project and #active, without having to make a new shortcut everytime or without having to do the special search syntax each time

To be clear, I’m not proposing that the tagging feature should be removed in favour of folder organisation.

I’m proposing that folder organisation is introduced as an additional option, so that users can choose their preferred method of sorting and accessing their notes.

I acknowledge that some may prefer tagging (like yourself), but others (like myself) don’t/won’t necessarily find this sufficient for their needs.

I believe that having tags instead of folders is part of Bear’s core.

+1 for smart folders. Seems this would have zero impact on Note structure, and would be transparent to users who ignore it. Non-structural folders for display purposes only based on “saved searches” like @Angel101 ‘s example. It could allow all of the Bear Search Operators and even regular expressions:crossed_fingers:

If you tag all notes with four separate tags ie (1-personal, 2-work, 3-school) you essentially recreate a folder system that is more versatile.

I am not sure what you mean. Do you want to have folders within the second pane (notes list)?

Have you tried toggling the “show child tags” in the notes list? This achieves a folder-like organisation. I don’t see the benefit of adding a separate organisation when we have this.

However, +1 to saved searches and smart folders.

Absolutely agreed that tag management would be helpful. Current inline solution feels very limited.

@Interpolar I am agaist expanding the tagging system with any type of folders.

Instead I like a divison of one database in separate notebooks or workspaces with a tag system dedicated to bussiness, home, private or other interests.

The visualization of notes can be improved, for example by introducing smart folders or workspaces to give context. Using tags to simulate a folder structure is unnecessary and appears more like an organizational workaround than a real aid for linking notes and improving search.
