Well, now you could of course conclude that encryption mechanisms will not be suspended as long as a state has no interest in the secrets of its citizens. This leads to the realization that we are well protected when we don’t need it and have no protection when we do.
Hello Matteo,
Thank you for the considerations and efforts that have been made by the team.
About the web app: Apple has managed to allow Photos on the web even with ADP turned on. Has Apple reserved that functionality only for its apps?
Good news
What could Apple have done in the UK that you would deem good?
They were demanded by a government to cede an E2EE backdoor into iCloud-ADP and instead of complying they completely pulled the service from the country.
As far as we know, no data was handed to authorities (since they did not have the keys in the first place).
Do you expect Apple to fight governments?
Unfortunately, yes. We’ve reached out to Apple but haven’t received a response yet.
hi Matteo, is there an ETA for the release of a live version of Bear that supports ADP?
I’m really hoping that it’s sooner than later! Hopefully we see it before the year ends.
They were demanded to make a backdoor to iCloud for ALL accounts. Instead of complying, they pulled ADP.
I think they should have just refused to make a backdoor.
I bet it will be sooner since they have one working already
I also can’t find this thread anywhere on the forum. Is this hidden?
When can we start testing note encryption whit attachments?
Fingers crossed that we get both! we’ll see I guess!
My queston at this point is:
why instead using only icloud, don’t offer as option sync whit an total E2EE encrypted server even whit a bigger optional subscription? this could also offer an easy way to extend on android and windows and so more clients.
We all understand that icloud and apple are absolutely not reliable for privacy and the only solution is a software who encrypt on device on cloud and offer access password no backdoors and internal vault!, the solution above not only make it easier but not force peoples to be into apple jail and offer the freedom of change system keeping your service subscription!
That justify a subscription!
That would be the dream.
But personally, right now, I would be more than ok with the option of encrypting the entire database. It would entail compromises - but I feel that it’d basically “address” this thread and all relative complaints. Attachment-only encryption is good (and I’m very grateful it’s planned) but it still leaves us with having to decide what content is sensitive and what isn’t.
Full database encryption would mean actually being able to recommend Bear as an app for privacy-sensitive content.
