Internal Link to another note is not updated in the locked note

  • Bear Version: 2.6.3
  • OS Version: Tahoe 26.0.1 (25A362)
  • What were you doing: linking notes
  • What feature did you use: internal wikilinks
  • What happened: The link to another note is not updated in the locked note when changing the title of the linked note.
  • What did you expect to happen: Update the link when changing the title of the note

Hello, I’ve noticed that in locked notes, the text of links to other notes isn’t updating.

And… in linked note, is not showing backlink from locked note.

While we rename note links when the linked note title changes, locked notes are encrypted, and only you can modify their content. I understand this might be controversial, but we don’t want to trigger a password request while a note is edited.

That is sound wisdom

This seems a bit inconsistent to me with other existing Bear functionality. Today, Bear prompts for a password when globally changing the name of a tag which appears in a locked note. This strikes me as the correct behavior, since without it, the feature to globally rename a tag would be useless.

Wouldn’t the same reasoning apply to ensure consistent behavior when renaming notes? Would be unfortunate if one’s link structure got broken because they weren’t aware of this rather-nuanced behavior when they decided to rename a batch of notes.

Given the behavior with tags, I believe this makes sense.

Yes, renaming a tag is a deliberate user action, so asking for the password there makes perfect sense. Changing a note’s title, however, isn’t quite the same, it can happen unintentionally, and prompting for a password in the middle of an edit session would make for a poor user experience.

We agree it would be great to have an easier way to update locked notes, but for now, we don’t have an ideal solution for this issue.
