Is it possible to automatically nest tags?

Hi all,

I’m a returning user of Bear (I last used it between 2017 - 2021… it’s too good to stay away) and i’m importing notes from Simplenote.

The import has gone smoothly, but I now have lots of tags in my sidebar. Is there a way to apply a tag to all these new notes that they can also be nested under at the same time? So, for example, popping them all under an Unsorted tag or similar.

I know I can bulk remove a tag to clean things up, but some of the tags that have been created might be useful.

I know it’s possible to add a tag to multiple notes by dragging the notes onto an existing tag. However, that doesn’t clean up my Sidebar.

I also know I can edit the tags in my Sidebar to add the parent tag. However, i’ve only been able to do this to each tag one by one. It’s a bit quicker than having to edit each note individually, but I wanted to ask if there’s a better way?

Thank you for your assistance.

I’m not at my computer to check this right now and might be misremembering, but can you drag and drop tags onto other tags in the sidebar?

Yes, you can. However, that only adds that tag. It doesn’t nest the tags.

Imagine this tag structure in the Sidebar:

  • gaming
  • hobbies
    • illustration
    • hiking

Dragging a note tagged ‘gaming’ to a tag called ‘hobbies’ will result in the note having both ‘gaming’ and ‘hobbies’ tags. However, it won’t create a ‘hobbies/gaming’ tag. The original gaming tag will remain in the Sidebar.

This is the issue i’m having since I have lots of tags that have been created when I did my import. Currently i’m deleting any that are obviously useless and manually adding ‘sort’ to the tags I want to keep to make them nested tags.

It’s really on me - I have obviously used lots of hashtags in my notes! - but I wanted to know if there’s an easier way to clear it up.

Sorry for the confusion — I meant dragging a tag in the sidebar itself to another tag there. But now that I’m at my computer and Bear, I can see that that dragging doesn’t work after all. Ah well.

No worries, it didn’t take me that long to manually fix all the tags. Just one of those quality of life things that would have been helpful, but not a big issue. Thanks for offering a suggestion anyway

Interesting. Would be cool if it nests the tag by dragging and dropping onto another tag when holding the option key or something like that.
