Pasting over existing link - label does not update

  • What were you doing: I typed in a link called original.com, then selected it and pasted a new link called pasted.com
  • What feature did you use: Command V
  • What happened: The link target changed to pasted.com, but the link label remained displaying original.com (see attached image)
  • What did you expect to happen: I expected the link label to change to original.com

That’'s normal behavior in any app that uses this sort of dialog. It’s up to you to change the label.

I don’t think it’s normal behaviour. When I use Word, it changes the both the link and the label.

You may be confused because I uploaded a screenshot of the dialog box. I didn’t use the dialog box to do any editing - I only showed that to illustrate that the link and label were different.

The exact steps I used were:

  • Open a Lettera document with a URL in it (the “original” URL)
  • Go to Safari, select another URL (the “pasted” URL) and copy it using Command C
  • Go to Lettera, select the existing URL and paste over it using Command V
  • Observe that the Lettera document now has a URL that has a label with the original URL but a link of the pasted URL

I wouldn’t look to Word for standard macOS behavior. This is what I see in multiple Mac apps, that the label is independent of the URL. After all, you may want the label to be the name of a page, or something else, not the actual URL. If you just paste the URL, it has to add it as a label, and that makes sense.

I just tried it in Pages and it works just like Word.

As I said above, I’m not using the dialog box.

Oh, I understand now. You’re just pasting the link. Since you posted a screenshot of the dialog, I assumed you were using the dialog to change the link.

If I paste a link without the dialog in Pages, the link isn’t live, so there’s nothing to edit.
