What were you doing: searching for @pinned
-
What feature did you use: search
-
What happened: a note pinned in Notes is not pinned under the tag #diary and vice versa. Notes are only pinned in the “folder” you pin them.
-
What did you expect to happen: a pinned note shows in all list
It’s even more strange.
- Open root ‘Notes’ folder
- Create note and add a tag
- Pin the note
- See the pinned note at the top with the pin icon
- Search for @pinned
- The note is shown in the search results
- Move to the tag list
- Verify the note is there
- See that the note is NOT pinned and does not have the pin icon
- Inside the tag, search for @pinned
- See the note in the search results
The other way around:
- Open the root notes folder
- Unpin the note
- Go to the tag list
- Pin the note there
- See the noted pinned
- Search for @pinned
- Notice that the note is NOT visible in the search results
- Move to the root folder
- Notice that the note is NOT pinned and no pin icon is visible
- Search for @pinned
- Notice that the note is not visible in the search results
My conclusion is that you shouldn’t pin a note anywhere else than from the root folder and even then it is only shown pinned there.
Additionally, the note is only visible in the search widget is it hs been pinned in the root folder.
In the left sidebar you have the so-called sections (Notes and everything below them) and the tags. A note that is pinned within the sections can be seen in every other section where it also appears. However those pinned notes won’t appear as pinned under tags. In the tags on the other hand this works completely locally: the note is only displayed as pinned in the one tag where it was actually pinned. That behaviour was implemented due to user request.
If you don’t know this, it is confusing to use @pinned in the search. To display all pinned notes, there is a separate entry below Notes in the sections.
This is exactly as I described and counter intuitive to me. Are you suggesting this is by design? If so this would be a feature request.
Yes, this is by design.
Pin a note in the All Notes section: it is pinned globally.
Pin a note as a tag is active in the sidebar: it pinned only in that tag.
That allows you to have globally pinned notes and notes that only are pinned in a tag (locally). That was a heavily requested feature by the community.
Thanks for the explanation. Then how do I let the pinned note in a tag show up in the Search widget? I can’t get this to work.
Very true, I can’t either, it’s only showing the most recent note, disregarding the pinned status. This is not mirroring the sidebar and it definitely should. @trix180 , may I tag you in this?
The search widget is supposed to emulate the result you get when you search from the Notes section. If you want to mirror the order in a specific tag, I suggest using the Sidebar widget and selecting the tag in the widget options.
Yes, that’s what I thought, but I can’t make it work on my iPhone, something seems broken.
You are right, I can confirm this is a bug with the widgets because they don’t take into account the local pinning. We’ll ship a fix with the next release.
