Something that I find bothering for building notes and think into Bear; the search and quick find algorithms are inconsistent between search / Quick open and wiki linking autocomplete.
Here I’m looking for a note called “Wishlist pour ambient type Carbon Based Lifeforms”. I can type the beginning of a few words, quick open finds it great:
But the same string gives nothing in wikilinks:
The words have to be typed precisely.
This inconsistency is treacherous in the worst of places. When you type and follow your thinking, try to link for things, that’s when you need speedy autocomplete. This behaviour may lead you to think you do not have a note on something, and then you end up with duplicates and scattered content.
Also, this inconsistency of behaviour is confusing and bad form.
Another issue is that Quick Open only searches in the 50 first characters of a note title. If you adhere to the Zettelkasten method, you may have longer titles than that, and therefore fail to find the note you want via Quick Open.
Now I suppose there are performance issues to that kind of database search. However, may I make the following suggestions?
- Have wiki linking use the same algorithm as Quick Open for easier finds
- Bump Quick Open’s algorithm character limit, if possible. If not, or it would hamper suggestion 1, please make the search and find experience consistent above all else! Following what Quick Open does, which is the superior experience.
Thanks!
