Search causing crash/freeze with database corruption

  • Bear Version: 2.8.1 (14428)
  • OS Version: macOS Sequoia 15.7.7
  • What were you doing: Searching my Todos
  • What feature did you use: Todo + Search
  • What happened: Full crash/freeze/beachball + database corruption
  • What did you expect to happen:

In the past month I have managed to cause a full-on freeze of the Bear desktop client twice when using search. Both times I had to use Activity Monitor to force stop the application. The first time my database got corrupted and a lot of notes did no longer list under tags I know they had. I think I did a backup and re-import to fix it then. This last time I have not seen any obvious corruption (yet), but I have lost some confidence in the integrity of my notes.

The included screenshot was taken just after the crash occurred this last time. I was in the “Todo” section and was going to search for “#daily”, but the app crashed when I typed “#d”.

I suspect your database file had a corruption aggravated by the search. Perform another backup to be sure not to lose any data, then quit Bear and delete the folder below on your Mac. Then reopen Bear to have it sync your notes from scratch or restore the backup if you are not a Bear Pro subscriber.
