Vanishing keys in the BIU keyboard on iOS

Out of the blue (l’ve been on this release for ages) Bear on iOS is losing keys from the BIU keyboard. It starts when I try to use the Highlighter key - it flickers on & off and then vanishes from the keyboard. When I use other keys they start to vanish too:

Force-closing Bear, and powering down and restarting my iPad haven’t proved a lasting solution to this. This is on the latest release of Bear on iOS which came out two months ago.

Do you mind telling me the iPadOS and Bear release you are running?

Bear 2.6.5 on iPadOS 18.5

Btw I’m unhappy that there has been no new iOS release of Bear in over two months, as I’m still stuck battling with this bug, that you said you were working on: Reddit - The heart of the internet

Also, why has my post on this been removed from the Bear subreddit? Given the slow response on my last bug, I was hoping another user would suggest a workaround for this in the meantime, as it is affecting my research work (I do all my work in Bear, and rely heavily on highlighting, so this is a real problem for me).

I guess the keyboard returns ot its normal state if you quit Bear and reopen it, correct?

Unfortunately, iOS/iPadOS 26 and the new development tools broke many minor things, and in some cases, we have no other way to work around these issues. We are close to an update, and we’ll ship it in beta soon.

This is obviously a bug, and I think it’s unlikely that other people can provide a meaningful solution.
With this consideration, I thought it was redundant to have the same message here and on Reddit.

I’m on iOS 18, not 26…
How would I get the beta update?

Still unhappy about this - surely it would be useful to know if other people have encountered the same thing, and under what circumstances, to help identify the problem? as the Bear subreddit with 23k members has vastly more “eyes” than the Bear support community. Also it feels a bit like “bad news censorship”, like Notability whose moderators try to discourage anything negative in its subreddit - something I wouldn’t expect from Bear

all the best, Neil

As mentioned, the development tools we are provided with matter here.

If you think this is going to be beneficial for your problem, feel free to repost on Reddit.
