Double-clicking "Bret" in "Bret Weinstein" highlights entire name unexpectedly

Hello,

I stumbled upon a weird behavior in Bear last week. I can reproduce it 100% of the time.

This affects iOS 18.3.2 and Bear 2.3.12.

Reproduction steps:

  1. Create a note with these contents
# Test note

Foo Bar fizz buzz.

Bret Weinstein foo bar.
  1. Double-tap “Foo”. This properly selects just the word “Foo”.
  2. Double-tap “Bret”. This incorrectly selects “Bret Weinstein”.

Reproduction video:

Expectations:
Double-tapping a word on iPhone is expected to select that word in its entirety. It is not expected that it also selects the neighboring word.

Let me know if you have any questions about this bug report or if you want me to try anything. Happy to try whatever you need.

Cheers!

Pretty sure this is an iOS thing, not a Bear thing. See this reddit thread for instance. Did you try the same test in other apps?

Hmmm. Looks like you’re correct!

I can reproduce this using Drafts (a different Markdown text editor) as well using the same note described above.

This workaround does work for me. So that’s good at least.

Here’s the workaround, in the case link ever dies:

I came here to find an answer to this question. Was hoping it was something I could just switch off because it’s stupid. But I muddled into a tedious workaround that’s also stupid, but at least it “works” more or less.

If you know you’re going to double tap the capitalised name or surname you want to change, just triple tap instead. This selects the whole paragraph, then you double tap just the word you’re trying to edit and it’ll unselect the paragraph to select only that word.
