Floating Info Panel Movement

  • Bear Version: Many, but currently running 2.3.12
  • OS Version: Many, but currently running Mac OS 15.3
  • What were you doing: trying to use the Info Panel in floating mode
  • What feature did you use: Info Panel floating mode
  • What happened: every keystroke moved the floating Info Panel window
  • What did you expect to happen: the Info Panel window would remain static

Over the past year or so I keep sporadically running into a bug where on some notes when I “float” the information panel out to the side of a note every keystroke I type in the note moves the info panel down on the screen (as seen in the screen capture video below).

I haven’t been able to determine what the common factor in the various notes that I experience this issue with is other than they are usually on the longer side of things. But what I have been able to confirm is that the issue only happens when you float the info panel while it’s set to the table of contents pane. If you float the info panel while it’s showing the statistics or backlinks panes and then pick the TOC pane, the bug doesn’t happen. I’ll try to do some more testing to see if I can figure out what the common factor in the notes I experience this issue with might be… maybe it has something to do with the nested headers I tend to use or the line separators or attachments or something.

P.S. sorry for the low video quality, but you can at least see the general issue I’m experiencing. I had to compress it a ton to stay under the 8mb upload limit. If there is a better/preferable way to include higher resolution screen captures please let me know.

I was able to do some more testing today and figured out that the bug happens when the list of a notes headers being displayed in the table of contents pane exceeds the info panel’s maximum window height when initially “floated.”

So to sum everything up…

  • WHEN a note has more header items than can be displayed in the info panels maximum window height without scrolling (maximum window height varies by screen size)
    • AND you drag the info panel into floating mode WHILE the TOC panel is selected (bug does not occur if the info panel is floated while on the stats or backlinks panes and then switched to the TOC pane)
      • THEN each and every keystroke typed in the note moves the floating info panel window down on the screen by a few pixels

Yes you’re right.
It is because the more you are typing or going into the next header, this amount of header cannot fit inside the whole table of contents and therefore is automatically scrolling down to show you.

@trix180 @matteo here is a screen capture demonstration of what the bug looks like and what consistently triggers it, if that helps you guys at all.
