QoL request: make it easier to exit Note List Search using keyboard navigation

On macOS, quitting Note List Search using the keyboard involves three(!) sequential key presses:

  1. ⌘⇧F to focus on the search box.
  2. esc to clear the search box.
  3. esc again to exit search and get back to where you were before initiating search.

This is extremely cumbersome UX for such a high frequency interaction. I use search dozens of times a day, and the need to remember this exotic key combination always breaks my flow. Too much friction.

The iOS equivalent is much better. One large “Cancel” button right next to the search bar. Tapping it once exists Note List Search. No redundant interactions. Smooth and intuitive.

What would be better?

Add in the macOS Bear app a menu bar item that does what the iOS “Cancel” button does. One key press exits Note List Search. That will make Bear perfect for me.

More to consider:

  • Make the ⓧ button behavior on macOS consistent with the “Cancel” button on iOS. Currently two ⓧ presses are required to quit search. I can understand the logic, but I prefer consistency with mobile.
  • Add a menu bar item and/or a contextual menu item to Search in Bear using user-selected text.
    • Reason: One of my favorite UX in Obsidian is that pressing ⌘⇧F automatically inserts the text selection (if there is any) into the search box. A one-press interaction feels MUCH better than a three-press interaction (⌘C ⌘⇧F ⌘V).
