Some polishing for the file browser

Isn’t there an official name for the left sidebar? I’ve just been calling it the “file browser” for now, because “workspace navigator” sounded too clunky to me. A nice name wouldn’t be bad, right?

Anyway, here’s a quick list of suggestions for improvements:

  • Options for where new files and attachments are saved. See here!
  • Custom icons for different file types (PDF, DOCX, HTML, …). Right now many file types have the same icon.
  • It makes sense for the folder icon to be filled. However from an aesthetic standpoint it doesn’t match the file icons. it looks to ordinary and boring.
  • Display folders together before listing the files. That’s what bothers me the most right now.
  • When all windows are closed and a new one is opened, it’s incredibly annoying that Letteras’ iCloud folder always opens when the app starts. Obsidian solves this by opening the window that was last closed.

If we were to use Apple standard naming, it’s just the sidebar!

Yes, this is on our list

Maybe, but we care more about files that you can edit in Lettera.

Options for sorting/filtering will be added soon!

That’s by design, but there are missing settings that are going to help: like setting the default workspace (something different that iCloud), not opening the default, etc…

Here an other point: the spacing is too tight for my taste. In the screenshot you will see a comparison with iA Writer that shows what I mean. It’s even more dense than Bear that uses relatively tight spacing.

It’s also very practical the way is Writer can show the beginning of each text file below its name.

And I’m a bit surprised by the colors of the folders in Lettera, which don’t match the Finder.
