Sorting and Preview Style on a Per Tag Basis

Hello Bear Team,

I think it would be cool if we could set Sorting and Preview Style for individual tags, much like what is now possible in terms of pinning being individualized on a per tag basis.

Hear me out:

For certain tags it would be useful to sort by creation date, like diaries or notes requiring a calendar based order.

For other tags it would make sense to sort by alphabetical order, like numbered chapters of a book.

For a tag like #read later#, it would be useful to set the Preview Style as “Hide Subtag Notes”. Thus, by creating a subtag titled #reading archive# nested inside it, it would be possible to clear read articles by moving notes into it, without affecting other tags in the database. With this simple change, Bear would become a better place to replace read later apps altogether.

For most tags the default sorting scheme should be the modification date of notes and with the menu “Hide Subtag Notes” unchecked. Thus, we would be able to customize which tags we wanted to have custom view styles and that deviated from the global Sorting and Preview Style of the app.

Thanks in advance.

While I would very much like to see sorting on a tag basis, I don’t think defining the preview style by tag is such a good idea. Neither is to set the sorting style on subtag basis. The reason is simple. I came from ulysses app and i found that it is very easy to lose track of how your folders are organized. It happens quickly and you can no longer see what’s going on, especially since Ulysses doesn’t show anywhere which sorting option has been selected for a folder.

To be honest, at least for me, it would be completely sufficient if you could set the sorting separately for sections and tags. The advantage would be that visual labeling within the UI would not be necessary, because you would only have to remember which sorting was selected in the sections and which in the tags.

However, it would also make sense to offer sorting on a tag basis synchronously with pinning: in the sections, only one sorting for all sections, but for the tags, as with the pins, even on a subtag basis. If this is the case, however, it is extremely important to visually clarify which sorting prevails.
