Auto-Update Footnotes After Deletion

Currently (v2.6.3), deleting a footnote in the body of a note does not re-number subsequent notes and leaves the footnote number and text at the bottom of the note. Both of those are still contrary to expectations. Deleting a footnote in the body should also delete the entire footnote from the bottom, and it should automatically re-number subsequent footnotes. Thanks!

Yes, we have on our list to try to improve this. However, it is a bit tricky as we don’t want to lose your information. Say, for example, that you cut and paste a paragraph that has a footnote reference. If we were to remove the footnote definition on the cut, then it would be missing on the paste. So, it is not entirely clear how a better solution would look. Suggestions are welcome!

Thanks for the feedback.

I’m sure the coding might be tricky. But the function is pretty straightforward, as employed by most word processors.

In your example, cutting a paragraph in a Bear note would also cut footnotes in the paragraph, which should also cut the footnote content at the bottom of the note. That deletion should renumber subsequent footnotes and reorder the footnote content at the bottom of the note accordingly. If the paragraph is then pasted elsewhere in the note, both the footnotes and their content would be included, which would also renumber all subsequent footnotes and reorder the footnote content at the bottom of the note.

Again, the coding needed to keep the footnote and the footnote content from a cut might have its difficulties. But checking how footnotes function in a major word processor (like Word) should be pretty simple.

Right. When I say “So, it is not entirely clear how a better solution would look”, I mean it from the technical standpoint having markdown as the data format. I have some ideas, but we will see what come out of it (and when).
