Bear 2.3.11 beta update

Hello,

we have an update for the testers. Version 2.3.11 includes the anticipated 4 new themes along with another small but requested feature: Read Only mode.

By using the right-click/long press on the note list or the ... menu > more > Make Read Only inside the note is now possible to make the note uneditable. An icon will appear in the toolbar and on the note list. By clicking on the toolbar is possible to quickly return to the editable state.

Here is the full change log. Let us know if you experience any issues with this build.

coreOS

  • Read-only mode for notes
  • 4 new themes
  • Fixed editor crash with collapsed sections

macOS

  • file:// links correctly open the Finder on macOS Sequoia
  • Fixed bug preventing attachments of archived notes to be opened
  • Shortcut export action bug corrected
  • Fixed issues with lists and dictation
  • Small fix for print not preserving the image sizes in some conditions

iOS

  • Images inserted via the iOS sharing extension are properly synchronized
  • Backlinks Pane on iOS now has a correct scrolling behavior
  • Opening a note while a search is active in the Notes List correctly scrolls you to the first result and focuses it
  • Now notes are correctly created when the Notes List has an active search containing a “-”
  • Fixing the search term edit in the Notes List when it contains color-changing special characters
  • Properly handling the visibility of the Editor left border on iOS
  • Notes in the Trash and Archive don’t show the BIU keyboard button on selection anymore
  • Improved the tappable area for resizing images on iPad
  • Removed crashes while using Sketcher
  • Leaving the current pane visible in the Editor when changing Apps on iOS
  • The disclosure button in the Backlinks pane is always correctly visible

How would one become a beta tester? I love that kind of thing. Aren’t apps designed for MacOS/iOS tested out in TestFlight or something?

Just got the update. Read only mode doesn’t sync? It’s per device only? Or is that a bug?

Also, tables can indeed still be edited in read only mode.

Love the new Read Only mode, have been waiting for that for a long time. Thank you very much

Issues:

  1. Bear MacOS beta missing … ?
  2. Setting read only mode stops syncing of that note (between iPad and iPhone) even after tuning it off again. Have the new beta on both iPad and iPhone …

Bear MacOS beta missing !!

Same exact thing here re syncing.

Sorry about that. macOS beta should be available now.

Read only mode is pretty nice handy. Would it be possible to get a shortcut for it? Would be hand to be able to toggle it - if cmd+enter toggles editing perhaps something say, cmd+shift+enter, could toggle unlock/edit and edit / lock?

In MacOS you can assign you own shortcuts in System Settings/Keyboard/App Shortcuts

Hi @roar, I am not in beta testing list of the app so really curious about how the read only mode works. Is it on per note basis ? Or you can just set into reading mode and browse all your notes in reading mode only (I will prefer later). Really excited for this small qol improvement.

Crash on iOS

Steps:

  1. Begin creating a new wiki link
  2. When the popup displays a list of pages click on it
  3. It immediately crashes

Bug when trying to empty the trash (iOS)

When I click on the empty trash button nothing happens.

The read-only mode doesn’t just prevent the note from being edited but also the sections (headings, lists, …) are not (un)foldable anymore. The triangle carets nevertheless are displayed although without any function. In a read-only mode there is no way to unfold a section to see its content.

If they doesn’t work I would remove them from sight as they provoke the expectation that they would. However, in my eyes the best would be to exclude the folding completely from read-only mode. The folding and unfolding of sections is not a process of editing a note but is related to how a note is shown. Although being in read only mode the collapsing of headings should remain available as they are useful further on

Another thought to the read only mode:

Does it make sense or gives any benefit that in a read only note the markdown syntax is shown on selection?

Yeah. Creating or deleting double brackets for wiki links on iOS and iPadOS crashes the app. However, you can highlight the text and select the wiki link toolbar button without crashing. :person_shrugging:

Edit: I can’t edit any text block with a wiki link without Bear crashing.

Don’t think so, and discovered another bug related to that:
When double tapping a word in bold or italics in read only mode, selection gets skewed  @trix180

Cheers, always forget that I can do that; wonder whether that syncs across mac (will have a look when I’m back at my desktop).

Would be great to be have the shortcuts on the iPad as well though.

Can you clarify how to simulate this issue?

Sorry I’m in India at the moment with very slow mobile internet via VPN. So seems that updates happened after some time – or it’s seems still to be a bit iffy after turning read only on/off

So, seems like updates are synced after all (or maybe not ), except that read only status does not sync.

Expected read only to sync like pinned state does, unless read only is meant to be per device and not global?
