- Bear Version: 2.75
- OS Version: iPad OS 26.5
- What were you doing: I was typing my note per usual in Bear Notes.
- What feature did you use: On my external keyboard (Yunzii YZ87 Mechanical keyboard), Fn-Backspace is a shortcut that turns the RGB Backlight On/Off. However, while I’m in Bear Notes, this key sequence did something very weird and dangerous. (This only happens with this particular keyboard and only with the iPad Pro..it doesn’t happen on the Mac. I’ve tried other keyboards on the iPad Pro with Bear Notes and this bug doesn’t occur, only with this specific hardware combination. As a troubleshooting step, I already reset the keyboard to factory default and the bug still occurs. I don’t have a Windows PC readily available so I have not updated the firmware on the Yunzii YZ87. That is about the only step I could think of that might resolve the issue on the hardware end). I don’t know exactly what keyboard codes the Yunzii YZ87 sends to my iPad Pro but it does something very weird and dangerous with Bear Notes but only on this specific hardware/software combination. By the way I’ve also upgraded to the latest version of Bear Notes for iPad and this bug still occurs and is repeatable. It is dangerous because with Auto Sync enabled it updates all my devices and effective erases the note without any confirmation.
- What happened: It deleted all the text on the note AND saves the now empty note in the trash. If you click any other key other than Cmd Z, your note with all the text you typed is gone forever. If you do anything else like checking the trash folder what you find is Bear Notes does save this note in the trash but with all the words deleted. So you essentially lost all of your work especially if you have auto-syncing on.
- What did you expect to happen: I didn’t expect this key combination to do something this dangerous in Bear Notes. I’ve lost notes that have a lot of data until I figured out why this happened. Fn-Backspace does turn the RGB backlighting on/off on my external keyboard that is all I expected to happen. Bear Notes does something unexpected and very dangerous when this keyboard sequence is used while currently in Bear Notes. Please look into it and advise.
Hello,
When you experienced this, were you writing inside the editor, or were you just having a note selected in the note list?
I’m asking because it’s odd that all the text is deleted, but it’s even more strange that the note is also moved to trash with one single keystroke.
If you perform the same keystroke on Apple Notes, what happens?
In answer to your question, yes, I was in editor mode with the cursor on the text of a currently open note. This bug only happens when I am in editor mode. Pressing Fn-Backspace, I see all the characters on that note disappear and on the side tab I see it updating as an empty note. If I immediately click Cmd-Z the note is restored but if I click anywhere else the note is saved with all the text deleted and I cannot undo. All my changes are lost in all my devices after Bear Notes syncs. It does not move the note into the trash.
I tried doing the same test in Apple Notes and the same thing happens. With Apple Notes, the text is deleted and I can recover with Cmd Z while that note is still selected. If I click on another note, that note disappears completely from the sidebar.
I even tried it in Apple Pages and the same thing also happens, all the text are deleted, Cmd Z immediately after this happens restores the deleted text.
It’s definitely an odd bug and it looks like a system wide issue with iPad OS as it happens on all text editors that I have tried. It even happens in Google Docs.
