Intial thoughts

First thing you guys have really knocked it out of the park. Really - you’ve done a fabulous job.

I’ll begin going through it more this evening but I just wanted to tell you this.

I second this! First impressions are truly impressive! I’ll explore it more in-depth tomorrow on my Windows PC.

I did notice a bug with the search feature and will open a dedicated topic to report it.

A few more thoughts after a full day of using the app

Today, I spent a lot of time using the web app, copying code snippets, writing meeting notes, and more.

I have to say, the web app is a real game changer! It makes it possible for me to fully transition to Bear for all my notes, though still doing regular backups until a notes history feature is implemented :stuck_out_tongue: Synchronization works incredibly well, even better than device-to-device syncing.

That said, I wanted to share some feedback about the features I missed the most:

  1. Full attachments support (I know you’re already working on this, which is great!)
  2. Shortcuts for BIU (e.g., Ctrl + B for bold, Ctrl + I for italics, etc.)
  3. Tagcons: I find them super helpful for quickly locating tags in the sidebar, and I feel a bit lost without them.
  4. Flash of unstyled content: I often see a flash of another font when opening a note before the correct font is loaded, even after the correct font is hopefully cached.
  5. Themes: Themes can already be tweaked via session storage, so it feels like only the settings section is missing.
  6. Scrollbar styles: Not urgent, but they’re pretty ugly right now.

So, good job again!

Thanks for the feedback.

Can you show a screenshot of the ugly scrollbars and describe what you expect instead?

When I said “ugly,” I just meant they are the default browser scrollbars , very heavy especially on the emoji selection dialog

I’d prefer a cleaner design, similar to what’s used in the desktop app. I’ve tried tweaking them with CSS.

Right, thanks! I will add it to the list and we will see if we will change it.

Is it possible to use quick open in the webapp or isn’t available yet?

Hi!
No the quick open action is not available yet in the webapp.

Hi @ffmich , can you please guide on how to do this ? By default it’s in default light theme, and I’d like to have a dark theme on bear web.

Sure, but keep in mind that I don’t think it’s an “intended” interaction for the beta. I just did it for fun, but otherwise, I’m using the default Graphite themes.

That said, here’s how you can do it:

  1. Open Chrome Developer Tools (F12 or Cmd+Option+I).
  2. Go to the Application tab.
  3. Navigate to Session Storage and select https://web.bear.app.
  4. Edit the dark-theme and light-theme values with the theme name you want to use.
  5. Close dev tools and refresh the page

Hope this helps!

This is really cool, thanks for sharing!

Hi! We’re making progress on this, but it didn’t it into today’s release. We’re trying to find a solution that gives a consistent behaviour across all major browsers, although we know that we may need to compromise eventually. In the meantime, at least the unnecessary horizontal scrollbars are gone from the autocomplete menus.

I was about to start looking for alternatives until a dev contacted me about the web beta.

So far it has been working great! I can work on my notes and create new ones when at work stuck with Windows. Can’t wait to see the future of the web app! :raised_hands:

After more than a week of almost daily use across different browsers and operating systems, it’s time to share more feedback.

  • The most significant issues I’ve encountered involve wikilinks. Me and others have reported some bugs, and I know you’re already working on them (e.g., app freeze, special chars and renaming issues, link to archive). Some of these issues are particularly severe, as they can lead to data loss.
  • The features I missed the most compared to the native apps are attachments, shortcuts, tag icons, and the ability to hide notes from subtags.
  • I hope the web app will be available as an installable PWA in the future. Currently, I keep it open in a pinned browser tab, but having its own icon in the application bar would be fantastic.

That said, I can confidently say you’ve done an excellent job! Despite these limitations, the web application has already proven to be extremely useful

Thank you! Knowing what you miss the most helps us prioritize.

We have considered making it a PWA, but our priority is to fix bugs and add the missing features.
