Performance degradation and crashes on large notes with multiple sketches

  • Bear Version: 2.9.3 (14670)
  • OS Version: iPadOS 26.6 (iPad Air M2 13")
  • What were you doing: Writing large notes with lots of sketches (actually using Bear as a handwritten notes app for university notes, with the majority of content in notes being handwritten).
  • What feature did you use: Sketches, markdown editing, iCloud sync.
  • What happened: As notes get bigger and contain more sketches, performance degrades. You then get to a point when even opening/closing the sidebar while reading a note makes the app crash.
  • What did you expect to happen: I would love the app to work properly with large notes containing multiple sketches. Adding sketches shouldn’t decrease performance by a lot.

I’m attaching a video in which you can see:

  1. the app crashing when trying to load the large note;
  2. the app working when selecting a “normal” note;
  3. the app crashing when trying to close the sidebar while editing the large note.

I appreciate any support you can provide on this.

Thanks for reporting this issue.
Do you experience the same crash if you try to open the note with your device connected to a power outlet?

Yes, it’s exactly the same even while charging.

I can open and work on the exact same note from my MacBook M1 without any issues, though. This makes me think that there might be some software issue when rendering sketches on iPad, but I’m just guessing.

I have been experiencing this for more than an year now :’) and I’d be very happy to see it fixed too

Came here to report the same issue. Seems like it may be related to the resizing behavior of the sketches since the app will crash if I try to go directly from the three window view (sidebar, notes list, note) to full note window with a note with lots of sketches. However, sometimes it doesn’t crash if I first go from three window view to two window view (notes list, note).

The claims coming by @GenuineSalad are not encouraging. Is this issue being explored or, at least, is it planned to do so? Is it a bigger hassle than expected? I don’t want to put pressure, I’d just appreciate a transparent update.

Unfortunately the problem is still there: I have several notes hosting multiple sketch blocks, and sketches in these notes are consistently registered with a delay - I would draw a line with the Apple Pencil, only for it to appear 1-2 seconds later :frowning:
