Restoring Keystroke to Insert Line Breaks

Have you noticed that ever since the release of macOS Sequoia the keyboard command, control+return, now returns a contextual menu (right-click menu), whereas it previously created a line break?
Yeah, it drove me crackers, as well.

My common use case for line breaks is for creating lists where I want to move to a new line without creating a new bullet point, like this:

Turns out you can restore the previous functionality in System Settings by going to Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Keyboard and deselecting ‘Show contextual menu’, like this:

Ta-Daa!!
This works system-wide for other text apps that have not specifically coded an override for this new default functionality.

I just want to share a bit more information about this use case: you can also press ⇧:leftwards_arrow_with_hook: to insert a newline without adding a bullet.

shift+enter and control+enter have different results. Actually I expect both to work same. Otherwise I would just hit enter. Here a video:

You may ask why the first list items is: “Also there is an unexpected behaviour”. Sometimes also control+enter gives same result as enter. I just hadn’t enough luck to reproduce it during the screenshot

Huh. That is curious…
Thanks for exploring the rabbit hole a bit!

Fantastic! Thank you for figuring this out easteraries. I use line breaks a lot for parenthetical comments within a bulleted item, poetry, addresses, etc, and this was incredibly frustrating. Given that line breaks are a standard formatting method, it’s insane that Bear requires this obscure work-around to enable them. The proper solution would be to change Bear’s keyboard shortcut to Shift + Return. That’s the Mac standard, used by every other text editor I’ve tried.

I agree. especially because control + enter is generally occupied for calling context menu if not deactivated in the keyboard hotkeys settings (see above!)
