Search Performance Issues

  • Bear Version: 2.3.12 (13245)
  • OS Version: macOS 15.4 and iOS 18.4.1
  • What were you doing: I was searching for a word within a large note.
  • What feature did you use: The in-note search feature.
  • What happened: When searching within a note containing 16,556 words (around 103K characters), the app slowed down significantly. The input in the search text box became unresponsive — I couldn’t see what I was typing. To demonstrate this, I tried using the “Accessibility Keyboard,” but it also froze during input. Additionally, the CPU usage spiked to nearly 70% on my MacBook with an M3 processor. The same issue occurs on my iPhone with an A16 CPU.
  • What did you expect to happen: I expected the search function to remain responsive and for CPU usage to stay reasonable, even with a large note. Smooth typing, real-time search feedback, and normal system performance.

I’ve been having similar search issues in longer notes, and found that at least part of the issue has to do with notes including bullets/lists for some reason. The developers are aware of in-note/editor search having some issues, and have said they are hoping to work on improving it in the near future.

Yes, I can confirm we are aware of this performance issue with search on large notes, and we’ll try to provide a solution with the next updates.
