Search widget on iOS: wrong results

  • Bear Version: 2.1.8
  • OS Version: iOS 17.4.1
  • What were you doing: Adding editing a Search Widget
  • What feature did you use: Search Widget with @Last2Days etc.
  • What happened: Wrong result, several new notes missing on widget list, compared to same search in Bear notes section.
  • What did you expect to happen: Showing same results in widget (or as many as fits the widget)
    • Also not working correctly with -@pinned
    • Annoying that “Bear” always comes up as search term when widget is first added or blank

Hello and thanks for reporting this. We have fix ready for this bug and will be shipped with the next update.

Thank you very much for fixing this in Version 2.1.9 (12599)

Tested on iOS/iPad :+1: :birthday:

Bear Version 2.1.9 (12599) on MacOS search widgets also works well after fix,
but here I now get a list of 2 Bear widgets to choose from:

Search Widget from 1st set works great and as expected

But any widget from the 2nd set, will ask for Bear to be opened on iPhone!??? when you click on it:

Widget from 2nd set of Bear widgets:

After clicking on any item:

Yes, Sonoma allows to use iOS widgets on Mac. Can be turned off in System Preferences.

I suspected somthing like that, but it still doesn’t make sense to me:

  1. The widget doesn’t open Bear on iPhone.
  2. Bear iOS/iPad doesn’t seem available to install on Mac Silicon, if that was the intended use.
  3. There is nothing indicating to the users that the second group of Bear widgets listed is for iPhone, and the widgets also look exactly the same until you click on them – and then quite confusing/useless message: “Open Bear on iPhone to Continue

Personally, I have no problem with it, now that I know the difference, but not a good user experience when you don’t know …

  • Are there no ways you can turn it off in your code?
  • Or mark the second group as “Bear iOS”?
  • Does it actuall have any practical function besides being confusing?:wink:

PS.
Both Apple Notes and Notability only show their Mac widgets and hide their iPhone widgets on MacOS even though they have them on iOS …

Notability iOS widgets are indeed not available on macOS so maybe there’s a flag somewhere for disabling those.

No, we have to change the app name for that.

Not for Bear. This feature is designed to give iOS-only widgets to Mac users, so I guess it might be useful for iOS-only apps.

Not sure why you see the Open Bear on iPhone to Continue.

Hi, is it possible to have version 2.1.9 on this weekend? I have some search problem with 2.1.8. Or join TestFlight?
